Grace Schwarz – Artist in Residence

Film, Photography, Multimedia

Residency Dates: April 2024

Studio H Canada is thrilled to welcome Grace Schwarz, an emerging, artist from Florida, USA.

Grace Schwarz is a multi-disciplinary artist specializing in video art, performance, installation, and 35mm photography. Her work is influenced by interests in entomology, baseball, and religion, rooted in family tradition and history. Her work navigates the societal and familial dynamics that interface with the physical and mental self, spanning across the layered representations of identity. The personal and the public are two spheres in which Schwarz lives within her work, finding common pockets of space and outlying wires to reconvene and find extensions of herself.

Through her time in Canada, she aims to broaden her scope of these pockets of space. With extensive time to research and reflect, she will continue to find meaning in the ‘everyday,’ each day. How symbolisms and codes within nature will follow her, internally and externally, from across North America is an induced self-experiment. Through this journey with those around her, both human and non-human, Grace is excited to discover new traditions, connections, and inspirations. A long-time approach Grace has also been engaging with is manifestations of self-identity, social spaces, and the “co-existence” of mankind versus the animal kingdom through the means of familiarity and extremities. The extremities and familiarities will have the opportunity here in B.C. to expand, deepen, and integrate in ways she cannot yet predict, but welcomes.
