Residency and creative practice

How long is a residency?

Studio H residencies are four weeks long, with arrival on the first Sunday and departure on the last Saturday of the residency period.

Is Studio H a self-directed residency?

Yes. Artists arrive with their own intentions, questions and ways of working. Studio H provides time, space, resources and support, but does not prescribe a program or require a particular creative outcome.

Do I need to arrive with a finished project plan?

No. Arrive with intention, not a fixed outcome. You should have a meaningful reason for undertaking the residency and some sense of what you want to explore, but your work can evolve or change direction while you are here.

Who is welcome to apply?

Studio H welcomes artists from Canada and around the world, across cultures, identities, backgrounds, disciplines and stages of practice. The important question is whether Studio H is a good fit for what you want to explore and whether the practical setting works for you.

What is the difference between Textile and Multimedia Residencies?

Textile Residency dates support artists whose work involves textile, fibre and related processes and who may benefit from dedicated access to Studio H’s textile resources. Multimedia is the broad option for artists working in other media or across disciplines; it is not limited to digital or media art. The two options also help Studio H pair artists and manage shared studio resources.

Is mentorship or feedback available?

Yes. Heidi is a fellow artist as well as founder and host. Mentorship, feedback, technical problem-solving and creative or professional conversation are available when useful and are not imposed.

Can I collaborate with another resident?

Possibly. Each artist directs their own residency, but conversation, exchange and collaboration can develop when both residents are interested. Collaboration is a possibility rather than an expectation or guaranteed part of the pairing.

Fees, funding and application

What does a 2027 residency cost?

The 2027 residency fee is $2,450 CAD in total: a $2,200 base residency fee, a $100 non-refundable fund deposit supporting the Irene Borins Ash Commemorative Textile Residency, and a $150 Maintenance & Sustainability fee. All fees must be paid before arrival. A payment instalment plan is available.

Does Studio H provide funding?

Studio H does not provide direct funding to artists. If you are accepted, have an agreement in place and have paid the required deposit, Studio H can provide a letter to support an external grant application. If your residency depends on external funding, timing and availability may need to be revisited if funding is not confirmed at least 90 days before the residency begins.

Can international artists apply?

Yes. International artists are welcome. Artists are responsible for meeting Government of Canada entry requirements. If you require a visitor visa, apply to Studio H once the visa has been granted. Studio H cannot provide immigration advice or guarantee entry to Canada.

What happens after I apply?

Applications are reviewed for artistic fit, residency fit and practical readiness. Selected applicants are invited to a Google Meet conversation. The Resident Guides are introduced at the interview so you can make an informed decision before an agreement is offered. If the residency proceeds, the next steps are offer, agreement, payments, pre-arrival preparation and arrival/orientation.

Accommodation and day-to-day living

Will I share accommodation?

Residents have private accommodation. Studio H has two accommodation options: the Studio Suite and the View Suite. The studio, parts of the property and some resident amenities are shared. Accommodation preference is important, but a particular suite cannot be guaranteed. See Residencies at Studio H for current details and photographs.

Do I need to cook and shop for myself?

Yes. Residents manage their own meals, groceries, laundry, garbage, recycling, compost and ordinary day-to-day routines. Studio H provides orientation, a welcoming environment and reasonable host support while residents remain responsible for their own daily needs.

What does Living Lightly on the Land mean?

It describes how residents care for this particular place together, including waste and recycling, septic and grey-water awareness, laundry, water and energy use, gardens, forest and shared-property care. It does not mean that your artistic practice needs to focus on environmental themes.

What does Studio H mean by readiness and independence?

Independence does not mean absence of support. Artists need to be ready to manage their own day-to-day needs and plan the transportation, materials, supports and practical arrangements they need to participate successfully. Help, information and conversation are available when needed.

What are the expectations around smoking, alcohol and drugs?

Studio H is a smoke-, cannabis- and street-drug-free residency. These expectations apply throughout the residency period and help protect the shared living and working environment for everyone.

Alcohol is optional. We sometimes have an informal weekly Happy Hour, but drinking is never expected and artists are always welcome to participate without alcohol.

What should I know about scents, smoke and ceremony at Studio H?

Studio H is a smoke-, cannabis- and street-drug-free residency. Incense is not permitted indoors.

Smudging and the respectful use of traditional smudging materials for Indigenous ceremony are welcome and encouraged. Indoor smudging is permitted with windows open, and artists are welcome to speak with Heidi in advance if there are any practical considerations around ceremony, shared space or ventilation.

A working soap studio is located at the back of the main studio, so fragrance may sometimes be present. If scent sensitivity is a concern, please raise it during the application or interview process so we can discuss what the environment is like and whether it will work for you.

Accessibility, transportation and the rural setting

What accessibility and terrain considerations should I know about?

Studio H is not a fully accessible site. The property includes sloped and uneven terrain and some stairs, and it is not suitable for wheelchair or walker access. This information is provided in advance so artists can make an informed decision about whether the physical environment will work for them. Practical arrangements or supports can be discussed during the application and interview process.

Do I need a car?

You don’t need a car to undertake a residency at Studio H, but you do need a transportation plan. Public transit and delivery services are available. Some artists use a combination of transit, taxis or ride services, deliveries and occasional pre-arranged rides. Host rides may sometimes be possible when schedules allow, but transportation from your hosts is not available on demand.

What should I know about the rural and studio environment?

Studio H is a working artist studio and rural property. Animal-derived materials may be used in the studio, including sheep wool and beeswax. Beginning in May 2027, honeybees will be kept on the property, and bees, wasps and other insects are part of everyday outdoor life. A working soap studio is also located at the back of the main studio, so fragrance may sometimes be present. If any of these conditions affect your ability to participate comfortably, raise them during the application or interview process.

Studio, materials and public activity

What studio space and equipment are available?

Studio H has a large shared studio, work surfaces, tools, textile and fibre equipment, digital and general studio resources, and outdoor working possibilities. The inventory changes over time. See Creating Here – Studio & Equipment for current details.

What materials should I bring?

Artists normally bring or source the materials specific to their practice. Discuss specialist equipment, unusual materials, large-scale work, ventilation, noise, power or safety requirements with Studio H before arrival so we can determine what is workable and what may require additional planning.

Do I have to give an artist talk, workshop or exhibition?

No. Public programming is not a required residency outcome. Talks, workshops, exhibitions and other community activities can sometimes be developed when they make sense for the artist and the residency and when there is enough time to plan them. Heidi requires 90 days to plan, promote, and coordinate events.

Can Studio H help with local resources or introductions?

Sometimes. Heidi can suggest suppliers, artist-run centres, community resources or useful introductions where there is an appropriate connection. These opportunities vary from residency to residency and are not guaranteed components of the program.
