Drawing, Painting, Sculpture
Residency Dates: June/July 2024
Studio H Canada is thrilled to welcome Louise Bunn, an a visual artist working in drawing and painting from Vancouver, BC as the Artist in Residence during June and July!
While at SHC, Louise will be working on a on a long–term project of intuitively mapping the ‘spirits of place’ of BC; “Working with colour and form, I enter into a liminal space and intuitive dialogue with both the landscape and my materials that I wish to further explore. I have not spent that much time in [Vancouver Island] and it seems a good opportunity.”
“I wish to immerse myself away from the day-to-day life, with more contact with the spirits of that particular land and place, manifesting their forms and ideas through my drawings and paintings.”
About the Artist
I am struck by the amazingness of life and our world, and how a small stone in the palm of your hand is really a story, complete with violence, passion, calmness, and stillness. I am interested in exploring how I, as an embodied being, experience the material world — my body passes in and out of the earth and the earth passes in and out of my body — as I pass through the flow of life embedded in a matrix of relationships to other humans, to animals and plants, to stones and to the stars themselves, and the strange, bewildering, numinous joy of being alive on earth.
I use symbolism and metaphor as the clearest way to communicate, and my pieces can be seen as gateways, passages, or indicators of liminal space, invitations to enter into this mystery — these markers of an inner terrain, and some of the symbols encountered along the way.
I find it fascinating that processes of decay are beautiful and mean that life is also happening there. Everything is in the process of becoming something else. And circles most powerfully symbolize this.
I believe that having an ecstatic, sensual relationship with the natural world is a gateway to wisdom.
