Elias Kubota – Artist in Residence, Canada

Textiles

Residency Dates: July 2025

Studio H Canada is thrilled to welcome Elias Kubota, an emerging Canadian artist who works in multimedia with a special interest in textiles – lace making and weaving. We can’t wait to see what Elias will create while he is here!

As an emerging artist I have been in a constant process of exploring and understanding what mediums and forms of artmaking best represent my interests in history and material culture. My recent work has been an exploration of fiber-craft in both historical and contemporary contexts; the legacy of fiber art and its place in the domestic economy as well as its reception as folk art provide the basis for my work moving forwards.

During this residency I intended to explore a medium which occupies an important space in our cultural, economic, and social history. Through my research into fiber-craft I have found it difficult, yet extremely fulfilling, to discover the small community surrounding this declining practice. I hope to gain further knowledge of this important and dynamic form of artmaking during the residency. In my time at Studio H I will expand my knowledge, skill, and relationship with weaving and lacemaking in order to meet my learning goals as a fiber artist and extend my practice into sculptural forms.
