Tess Gartland-Jones – Artist in Residence

Painting

Residency Dates: March 2024

Studio H Canada is thrilled to welcome Tess Gartland-Jones, a visual artist focusing on painting from the United Kingdom. Tess will work en plein air on sites here at Studio H and around the local region and then take her work into the studio for further development.

Tess is a full time artist working and exhibiting in the UK with an earlier career of postgraduate research and lecturing in the arts employing both traditional processes and interactive,   computational knowledge. The creative motivation for her practice for some years now is to seek out those landscapes that whisper something of the wild, of authentic beauty, be it ancient or aided rebirth through nurturing. For Tess, a square meter of restorative sea grass planting may be as compelling to observe as the sky meeting unfolding salt marshes on the tide.

Depicting an expansive landscape scene may tell us one story about light, form or generic subjects associated with nature, but this process can involve editing out the details of where or how elements meet within a landscape. The residency will be an opportunity not only to pay homage to such magnificent expansive landscape, but to also elevate the importance of the tapestry of micro details and emergent qualities of each place. Simply by playing with scale and rearranging contexts of subjects, I hope to consider the intricacies, vulnerabilities and preciousness of this compelling landscape that I have walked in before but without the chance to truly spend time.

About the Artist

Tess trained as a painter at Bath Academy of Art in the UK before going on to do an MA and further postgraduate research. Academic life led to a period of time combining her fine art studio practice with computing and publishing her work on non-linear genetic algorithms for drawing. Gradually, Tess returned full time to the visceral handling of paint and her love of being in the landscape. Long walks and journeys around the world have become painting expeditions that drive the desire to capture a sense of beauty and a host  of thoughts and impressions.
