Dinosaur Provincial Park in Alberta is one of the most important UNESCO World Heritage sites in Canada, and the largest late Cretaceous (75 million years ago) find in the world (so far). They say, “if you drop your hat and don’t find a fossil, then you’re not in Dinosaur Park”. The bioreserve is the source of bones and fossils for the Royal Tyrell Museum in Drumheller, some 170 kms north west of the park, but bones from this area have been collected since the late 19th century and can be found in several major museums in the USA.
While the park provides great interest for dinosaur and fossil hunters, palaeontologists, and all kinds of scientific and geologic researchers, some contemporary artists are also fascinated by this place. Heidi Bergstrom is one of those artists who, after discovering the Drumheller region in the early 1980’s has been deeply influenced by this land and its history in her art since then.
In this talk, Heidi will share her knowledge of the park, her creative work and plans for artistic and cultural research in the park.

About the Artist
Heidi Bergstrom, MA, BFA, is a multimedia visual artist, curator, and cultural researcher in Victoria, BC, Canada. Her fine art practice and exhibitions include works in painting, printmaking, video and photography and multimedia installations.
Heidi’s education includes a Master of Arts in Political Science from the University of Victoria, BC (2019). Her thesis focuses on the intersection of Canada’s cultural policies and international trade disputes at the WTO concerning the UNESCO Convention for the Protection and Promotion of Cultural Expressions. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Honours (1990) from York University, Ontario, where she majored in studio and art history. Heidi also studied visual arts full-time at the Toronto School of Art (1984-86), and in 2000 achieved a Diploma in New Media (Internet Site Design, 3D Animation, and Interactive Multimedia). Heidi’s artistic background also includes dance classical ballet and contemporary/modern dance.
Heidi has been involved with many arts organizations including her current role as President for Xchanges’ Artists’ Gallery and Studios in Victoria, BC. You can learn more about Heidi and her studio in Metchosin at her personal website and her International Artist Residency program site.
